LeithLate began in 2011 as a grassroots, one-night only art crawl on Leith Walk ending in an afterparty with live music at Prilrig Church. The event grew year on year entirely self-funded until 2015, when Creative Scotland helped fund 4 months of LeithLate creative events including art exhibitions, mural tours and artist exchanges. The LeithLate16 festival was also supported by Creative Scotland with the City of Edinburgh Council supporting the LeithLate17 festival. All funding achieved to date has been on a project to project basis.
The last LeithLate festival took place over four days in June 2017 with a diverse programme of visual art, theatre, poetry and live music, as well as our now famous mural tours and brand new public poetry trail. LeithLate17 saw pop-up arts events taking place across a variety of Leith spaces, including The Leith Walk Police Box, Settlement Projects charity shop, the Leith Walk Laundrette, social enterprise curry house Punjabi Junction, and Trinity House’s historic underground vaults. There was no LeithLate festival in 2018.
